ABOUT ME
Darby Hubbell
I was born and raised in Raleigh, NC, and graduated from East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations, and a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies with a concentration in Eastern Studies.
I am a recognized leader in managing strategic, results-oriented initiatives that drive business growth. I have proven to be successful in connecting with audiences through online content, PR campaigns & social media marketing. I am an award-winning operations manager experienced in creating & implementing processes that drive organizational efficiency and improve the quality of output. Finally, I am extremely passionate about leveraging data to optimize marketing campaigns that achieve results.
I am an Enneagram 3 wing 2, which means I am an "Achiever" who gains strength from helping and engaging with the people around me. I love meeting and conversing with new people and maintaining relationships with old friends. I enjoy stepping out of the left side of my brain into my right, creative side. I like to use my imagination in all of my projects, from making beautiful graphics to writing news releases. I am a goal-setter and natural organizer. No matter where I am, I strive to create platforms of success for myself and a legacy for my successors to build upon.
My top 5 CliftonStrengths include Competition, Significance, Achiever, Command, and Woo. These five natural talents turned strengths fall under the following domains: Executing and Influence. I work extremely well with others in strategic thinking sessions and thrive when I am brainstorming ideas and executing plans with a creative team.
I truly glow when I am surrounded by other motivated and creative humans. I've always enjoyed a good challenge and oftentimes find myself working closely with underdogs, tackling complicated issues with proactive & strategic problem-solving. I strive to go above and beyond what is asked of me and always go the extra mile for big or small projects.
I enjoy living a healthy and active work/life balance. In my free time, I enjoy golfing, pilates, going for long walks with friends, as well as thrifting & antiquing for small or big treasures. These activities stimulate my creative side and bring the joy of community into my life on a day-to-day basis!
I started to recognize these natural talents of mine turn into strengths during my time at ECU. During my sophomore year, I started writing for The East Carolinian (TEC), which is a student-written, student-designed, and entirely student-ran print and online news publication that is delivered to campus twice a week. I worked as a news beat reporter for two semesters and then decided to stay in Greenville over the summer to help run and write for the publication's once-a-week edition.
I found myself being promoted within ECU's Student Media department every semester after my Sophomore year. First from news reporter to news editor, next, I became Editor-in-Chief of the student interest magazine, The Hook, which was supported by the staff at TEC. Finally, I was promoted to serve as General Manager where my role was to oversee all four student magazine publications, one per semester, and ensure all staff members were reaching their deadlines. I worked closely with the in-house student-led advertisement agency as well to make sure funding was being met.
Throughout my time as General Manager, I was able to make significant positive changes in the overall management and functionality of student media. As I climbed through the ranks of ECU Student Media, I noticed significant errors that were being made which in turn had negative effects on production nights, meeting deadlines, and costing the media divisions money they couldn't afford to spare. I also tried to heal the serious overturn of employees due to the poor relationships and communication style of senior staff members. I ended up writing a manager handbook that is still used to this day by my successors to ensure all deadlines and relationships are met with the utmost care and professionalism.
I have learned a lot about myself and others throughout my various work and leadership experiences. Teamwork provides me with the opportunity for growth and outside advice. I enjoy the confidence I feel in presenting my own ideas backed by research and data and building upon others' input in a collaborative environment. There's nothing more valuable than being on a team that pushes you to think bigger and better!
